Version 1.0

So this is Ruins.

I've been working on it for a bit over 3 months in my spare time. It started out as a way to experiment with Godot and then rapidly evolved into something entirely of it's own. I was shocked when I couldn't think of any digital games that make good use of the fun that players have at tabletops rolling real dice and taking real notes on paper. I also have a love of designing mechanisms around literalism and wordplay which tied in neatly to what was coming together.

Pretty quickly I ended up with a bunch of strong design constraints to help shape development:

  • Don't store any play data to disk between sessions. All information about the player must be stored by the player manually.
  • Player action outcomes have to be determined by players rolling dice, doing their own arithmetic, and entering their results.
  • All art has to be drawn by hand in my sketchbook and then scanned in. Post processing is allowed.
  • All sounds have to be made with my voice and mouth. Post processing is allowed.

The end result is, hopefully, a roguelike that feels a bit like I am GMing a single player session of an old school dungeon crawling ttrpg. The fact that the character sheets were external to the game then also gave the opportunity to share in the experience of the game with others at campfires.

The end result is something I'm extremely excited about and also something that is surprisingly personal somehow so I'm both nervous and also eager to share it with all of you. I hope you like it.
